Watering is key to growing a healthy garden, but when is the best summer month to regularly start watering outdoor plants and flowers?

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), you should start watering more frequently from the start of May. While it's important to give them a drop of water if they are looking dry, May is typically when the weather warms up, meaning our favourite flowers will be in need of water more often.

As well as starting in May, the RHS explained that if you're looking to optimise your plants' growth then you should water your garden early each morning. Not only is this when plants will start to use their water, but it will also discourage pests from munching through your plants.

"Water in the mornings, if you can, as this is when the sun comes up and plants will start to use water," the gardening charity told The Express. "The foliage and soil surface is also likely to stay drier for longer than evening watering, discouraging slugs, snails and mildew diseases.

"Plants start to transpire in sunlight, drawing water from the soil, through their roots, up their stems and out through tiny pores on their leaves called stomata. Watering in the heat of the day is not a good idea as much water is lost through evaporation from the surface of the soil and the plants will use water more efficiently if watered in the cooler parts of the day."
